BlogElul 17: Awaken
Over the summer, a group of rabbis, cantors, educators, and friends serving on faculty at OSRUI were eating dinner at a lakeside restaurant in central Wisconsin.
A Mumford and Sons song came on the radio: Awake My Soul.
One of the most popular settings for a morning prayer at camp is taking this melody and setting it to the text "Elohai Neshama" -- the soul you have given me.
In our liturgy, we thank God every morning for giving us pure souls -- and we ask that our souls be awakened.
The Mumford and Sons song has been used in our Tefillah as device for helping our youth make contemporary connections with prayer.
For us adults, sitting outside and watching the beautiful setting sun, we couldn't hear the original lyrics without thinking about the connection with Elohai Neshama.
